How to Play Jinx - Rules of the Word Game for Two

Jinx sounds trivial until you try it: two people get a category and have to say the same word at exactly the same time. No talking it over, no agreeing in advance, just "one, two, three". It turns out that landing on the same word as the other person takes a fair bit of luck, a touch of telepathy and knowing how your partner thinks - and every missed attempt gets funnier than the last.

The rules of Jinx

The mechanics are simple, though the game itself can be surprisingly tricky:

Pick two players who play against each other (or together, depending on the variant).
A category or starting prompt appears, e.g. "a fruit", "something cold", "a famous film".
On the signal, both players say one word that fits the category at the same time.
If they say the same word, it's a "jinx" - you did it, round won.
If the words are different, they become the new starting points and you try again until you both land on the same word.

The goal is to "sync up" - to meet at a shared word. In some versions what counts is how many attempts it takes the pair to reach a jinx: the fewer, the better.

A sample round

It's easiest to show with an example. Category: "something you associate with summer".

The players say at once: "sun" and "beach". Miss.
Now they try to connect those two clues. They say: "sea" and "sand". Still different.
Next attempt, building on the previous ones: both say "holiday". Jinx!

The whole fun is that with every round you try to get inside the other person's head. The better you know each other, the faster you sync up, which is why Jinx works so well for couples and close friends.

How to make it more fun

Play against the clock or count attempts. Count how many tries it takes a pair to reach a jinx, and compete to see which pair does it fastest.

Run a pairs tournament. In a bigger group, a system where each pair tries to beat the previous pair's score works brilliantly. Everyone else cheers and gives hints (or deliberately throws people off).

Add a party element. At a house party, the pair that doesn't reach a jinx within the agreed number of attempts takes a sip, or does a small forfeit in the alcohol-free version.

Mix up the pairs. It gets funniest when you pair people who barely know each other - their attempts to sync up are often wildly off, and that's what makes them hilarious.
