How to play Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever is probably the simplest party game there is. No board, no dice, no three-page rulebook - just a group of people, something to drink and good questions.

  1. Sit in a circle - two people is enough, but it works best with 4-10 players.
  2. Everyone has a drink within reach (alcohol, juice, water - whatever you like).
  3. Take turns reading a statement starting with "Never have I ever...", e.g. "Never have I ever lied to get out of a meeting."
  4. Anyone who has done it takes a sip (or, in the alcohol-free version, does a small forfeit).
  5. The best part: whoever admits it tells the story. That's where the best moments of the night come from.

There's no winner and no end - the game runs as long as you have the mood and the questions. You can go around the circle or pick one person who holds the phone with the deck and reads all the prompts.

"Ten fingers" variant: everyone starts with 10 fingers up and folds one down for each confession. First to run out of fingers loses (or wins, depending how you look at it).

Warm-up questions

At the start, when the group is still settling in, light and universal questions work best. Everyone admits to something, nobody gets tense.

There are 100 questions like these - light, but hitting everyday slip-ups - in the Never Have I Ever Classic deck. Perfect for the first hour of the party.

Funny Never Have I Ever questions

These get the most laughs - and the most "okay fine, that was me."

Party questions for friends

Classic prompts about parties, nights out and mishaps - perfect for a house party once everyone's had their first drink.

More games in this spirit are in the Drinkify offer - alongside Never Have I Ever you'll find Truth or Dare, Taboo and Jinx It.

Spicy questions (with class)

Once the mood warms up, it's time for stronger questions. They pull out the best stories - but stay at a level where nobody feels awkward.

18+ Never Have I Ever questions

For a close group that likes it a bit bolder. Save these for when everyone's relaxed - and remember, anyone can pass.

Want more? The Never Have I Ever Uncensored deck - our bestseller rated 4.8/5 - has 100 far bolder questions that bring out secrets nobody would normally mention. Buy once, play forever - in the browser or in the Drinkify app.

Questions for couples

For a night in for two or a get-together with a few couples - a test of how well you really know each other.

If you want to go a step beyond Never Have I Ever, check out the decks made specifically for couples: Tell Me: Intimate and Tell Me: Relationship.

Bachelorette and bachelor party questions

Perfect for the bride or groom to learn something new about their friends - and the other way round.

For this occasion we have two dedicated decks of 100 questions each: Never Have I Ever Bachelorette and Never Have I Ever Bachelor - prompts written for the bride, the groom and their crews.

Alcohol-free questions - for everyone

Never Have I Ever works just as well sober - at a team-building trip, with family or with teenagers. Instead of a sip: a penalty point, a small forfeit, or simply a story.

The app with ready-made questions - so the game never dies out

Coming up with questions on the spot sounds easy, but after the tenth "never have I ever..." ideas usually run dry and the fun fades. That's why we built the Drinkify app - all the decks are on your phone, you pass it around the circle and play. No printing, no collecting cards, no scrolling through a blog in the middle of a party.

How to make the game actually interesting

A list of questions is only half the job. A few tricks that make the difference:

Demand the story, not just the sip. The most boring version of the game is everyone silently drinking. The best one is where every confession is the start of a story. Set a rule: whoever drinks says two sentences about how it happened.

Escalate gradually. Start with warm-ups, move to spicy and 18+ only once the group has loosened up. One question that's too strong at the start can kill the fun before it begins.

Match the questions to the group. You'll ask different things at a student house party, a bachelorette and a couples' night. That's why the lists above are split into categories.

Add a "right to pass." Everyone can skip one question per night with no explanation. That way even the 18+ prompts never get awkward.

Look after the non-drinkers. Instead of a sip - a small forfeit or an honest confession out loud. The game works great fully alcohol-free.

What occasions is Never Have I Ever good for?

Never Have I Ever FAQ

How many people do you need? At least two, but the most fun is with 4-10 players. The more people, the more surprising stories come out.

Can you play without alcohol? Yes, and it works just as well. Instead of a sip, whoever confesses does a small forfeit or simply tells the story. There's a separate alcohol-free list above.

What questions should I ask at a party? Start light and funny, after the first drink move to party and spicy prompts, and save 18+ for when the group is close and relaxed. The order matters.

What are good 18+ Never Have I Ever questions? The best ones are about dating, late-night slip-ups and secrets people usually keep to themselves - see the 18+ section above. The Never Have I Ever Uncensored deck has 100 of them.

Where do I get questions so the game doesn't stall? Easiest is to download the Drinkify app (Google Play / App Store) - the Classic deck has 100 questions, Uncensored adds 100 bolder ones, and the Bestsellers bundle gives you three decks for less. No need to invent anything - the game just flows.

What's the difference between Never Have I Ever and Truth or Dare? In Never Have I Ever everyone reacts to the same statement at once, so the game is faster and more group-oriented. Truth or Dare focuses on one person at a time and offers a choice between a question and a challenge. Both are on Drinkify - Truth or Dare Classic is a great follow-up to Never Have I Ever later in the night.

Is Never Have I Ever the same as "Ten Fingers"? Yes - it's the same game, just with fingers instead of sips. See the variant in the rules section.

Ready to party? Get the Drinkify app for Android or iPhone, or pick a deck in your browser - pay once, play forever.

Please play responsibly. Games involving alcohol are intended for adults only (18+). Keep water and snacks around, plan a safe way home - and anyone who doesn't feel like drinking should be able to play by their own rules.
